Theater Time: Zooman & the Sign

Zooman and the Sign Runs every weekend in March

Recently, I had the pleasure of watching one of the most relevant plays that Buffalo may see this decade: Zooman & the Sign ( http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=187807561241162 ).  I’ve seen my share of theater and I need to say that the Alemaedae Theater and Xavier Films put on an amazing production of this Charles Fuller play.

With recent senseless acts of violence such as the City Grill shootings, this play brings to the forefront of our community one thing: we need our community. Originally written over 30 years ago, it’s shocking how not much has seemed to change in our society.

The play centers around the drive-by murder of a 12-year-old girl Jinny Tate and the fact that while many neighbors witnessed the crime, no one will admit it.

It seems fitting then, that the Buffalo family of the recently murdered 15-year-old Dominique Maye (who was shot and killed last September by a stray bullet while doing her homework) was in attendance.   Their bravery to sit through such a near reenactment was beyond commendable.

The actors deliver a stunning, moving performance that brings the audience to tears. When the mother “Rachel” weeping over the death of her 12-year-old daughter, delivers the lines “…there was so much blood…I tried to save it so I could bring her back to life…” I nearly lost it.

“I carry a gun and a knife!” says the antagonist Zooman. The murderous gang member leads the audience through a series of monologues that seem to justify his actions. We see not only a murderer but a man who, as a boy, was a clear victim of his horrible circumstances. After surviving the abuse as a child, he survived the only way he could as an adult. Though however horrible his situation, one finds it difficult to empathize.

The show overall was an incredible experience and I HIGHLY recommend you check it out before it’s over. It runs every Saturday and Sunday in March at TheaterLoft on 545 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, NY 14222.

Make sure to show the production company some love:

Jocelyn Bowman and Love` Anthony at the “I Hate Love” / “Love2Eat” Viewing Party

Love` (left) and Jocelyn

Last Sunday during Valentine’s Day weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting two incredibly beautiful and talented women who are making giant strides in the local entertainment industry. First, I interviewed the lovely recording artist Jocelyn Bowman (www.iamjocelyn.com) for The Mix (www.youtube.com/enterthemix).

Her voice (and her hard work) has opened several doors for her. Recently, she had the opportunity to open for Fantasia and Tank where she absolutely killed it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyhss3MTwks)! When I asked her why Valentine’s weekend for her anti-love themed single I Hate Love, she said “What better time for those who have been jaded by love.” I couldn’t agree more. Although she made it clear that she did have a Valentine, Jocelyn seems to have lived some of the ‘ins and outs’ of love, judging from the passion behind her lyrics. Make sure to check her online store for apparel and her new fragrance.

I also met the beautiful and intelligent Love` (pronounced low-VEY…points for an awesome name!) Anthony who debuted her web-based TV show Love2Eat ( www.youtube.com/love2eattv ) …and how fitting to meet a gorgeous woman named Love` on Valentine’s Day weekend :)

This pretty Buffalo native has launched a series focusing on the tastes, people, and atmosphere of New York City’s hottest restaurants, hotels, and clubs as well as it’s best kept secrets. Her series has the content and quality to rival any Food Network or E Channel show…and it’s accompanying music is on point. Love’ has not only produced a quality, entertaining show that makes your mouth water, but one that keeps viewers watching. With the scenic backdrop of the greatest city in the world and a stunning hostess, Love` has tapped into a niche that needed to be rocked! Make sure to ‘Like’ Love2Eat on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/Love2EatTV ).

Keep it rockin’

Branded as ‘Single’

Wanna be a movie star? a rock star? a pop icon? an entertainment reporter? Well consider this: being single in the entertainment industry may get you further.

Aside from the distraction of spending time with another person in your life and focusing less on your career, the ‘look’ of being single portrays one major trait: you’re obtainable. People who want to ‘obtain’ you will generally do things to help you and your career. If you are married or in a relationship, you are off limits to others. Others who may want to help your career.

Think about it; how disappointed would you be if Nikki Minaj got married? or Trey Songz? What about Megan Fox? or Kanye West? How many Halle Berry movies did you watch when she was married?

Hey Alicia Keys, why did you have to marry Swizz Beats? Oh how heartbroken I was this past summer when the news broke of Zoe Saldana’s engagement! Even then, Zoe was observed not introducing her man as her fiancé, noting that she likes to keep her personal life to herself and wants people to focus on her as an actress.

Celebs seem to get married only when they reach a level of uber-success. So why do celeb marriages seem never to last? Maybe because when they gain a partner, they lose their support system. Their opportunities dwindle.

So choose wisely. Either love, or fame and success, because initially you can’t have both. Not until you’ve reached a higher level may you have love. But by that time, is it too late?

New Year’s Eve: Amateur night

Shots Shots Shots!!!

Saint Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving Eve, The Fourth of July, and New Year’s Eve all have a few things in common: Great reasons for celebration, great food, family, friends, and one more thing… It’s “amateur night” for those who don’t normally drink alcohol or end up drinking to excess. The amateur drinkers crowd the streets, bars, restaurants, and local food marts looking for one thing: to attempt to ruin your night.

How to avoid the rookie brigade:

You can take several steps to avoid your night of celebration turning into a night of hell-ibration.

1. Learn to identify the prospective drunk. Knowing who your night-crasher is will help you avoid the impending disaster. Look for watery, half-closed eyes, a clumsy gait, and ever-so-tell-tale urine-stained pants. Avoid those with barf-stained clothing.

2. Avoid eye contact.Once those cross-eyed idiots lock on, it’s like a death-ray tractor beam pulling you into a stupid situation. Look away and even pretend to say a friendly ‘hello’ to someone who may not even be there. Keep them in your peripheral view, in case they decide to come at you, but staring at the drunk only draws attention.

3. Befriend the bouncers. There’s no friend like a 6’4″, 250 lb bouncer to watch your back.

4. STAY HOME! There’s always that. You can prevent the situation altogether, but who in the hell lives their life that way?! How about this: If you’re that guy (or girl)…STAY THE EFF HOME and stop ruining our night, amateur!

Confessions of a Runway DJ

Work it, spin it!

DJ TIMES Magazine Blogs on DJ ROCK!!! (From www.djtimes.com/blog) September 17, 2010

“Hands off the models!”

So says DJ “Rock” Spitale about the first rule of spinning at fashion shows.

“Womanizers (or man-eaters) do not get re-hired,” he adds.

On the closing day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, New York City, this is a fitting manifesto, and a useful corollary for any DJs out there who can’t keep their hands to themselves—exceedingly difficult, perhaps, among such nubile and strikingly gorgeous specimens, both male, female, and otherwise, as they strut up and down the runway.

DJ Rock, aka Paul Spitale, who spins at Victoria’s Secret ‘Pink’ Event and the Mass Appeal Fashion Show, advises DJs looking to get into the fashion game that’s it a pointless pursuit if you lack one crucial ability: “You have to relinquish control,” he says.

Ouch.

“Your job as a DJ is to gather information, interpret it, and create your playlist from the limited information supplied.”

First, says Rock, you have to meet with the show’s lead producer, who, God-willing, has a clear vision of the event. Usually, a theme is involved—could be “beggars and thieves,” the “apocalypse,” or “things that look like head cheese”–which narrows the music selection. Some producers may even want you to write your own music or create remixes, a great way to either put your signature on the event, or create a mass exodus of fleeing models.

“And you must meet with the designer,” he says. “Visit their website, store, and/or studio if they have one. Take detailed notes and jot down what songs come to mind when you see their designs. Many designers will even provide a playlist for you. Just make sure they are clear that you (or they) must check their list with the show’s producer. Ask for clean, edited versions of the songs. Fashion shows often have diverse audiences, so cursing or inappropriate subjects on a track can make for an embarrassing moment. Screen all of your songs beforehand.”

The one sure-fire way to not get re-hired, save for groping? Three words: “I’m Too Sexy.”

Disk Jockey Adopts Actors’ Techniques, Gains Stalkers

Act like a DJ

DJ TIMES MAGAZINE Blogs about DJ ROCK!!!

Can Jon Hamm, or Eminem, or James Hetfield’s ass impart any wisdom on your performance as a DJ? Can they help you fill floors?

Sure, try familiarizing yourself with the idea of blocking, and watch your audience engagement increase. If you’re lucky, they might even start stalking you.

But how?

“As an actor/performer, I was always trained to “block” correctly, or turn my body in a way that faces the camera or audience, even when interacting with a fellow actor or performer,” says DJ Paul. “We’ve all gone to see the amateur band where the lead singer turns his back to the audience for some reason. I was guilty of that too when I was first starting out. It looks horrible, right? Compare that to the incredible live performers such as Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Eminem. They never turn their back on their audience, unless for dramatic effect. Yes, they interact with their band members and other artists on stage, but they do it in a way that includes the audience. If I go to a Metallica concert, I don’t want to be staring at James Hetfield’s ass all night. He knows how to interact with his band without cutting me out of his experience.

“As a DJ, I put on a performance for my audience. I keep their attention and keep them engaged all night long. The music can only do so much for a DJ. When I’m blocking correctly, I make the audience a part of the experience.”

DJ Times Magazine Blogs on DJ ROCK!!!

From the November 1, 2010 DJ Times Magazine Blog www.djtimes.com/blog:

"You can't argue with crazy..." says DJ Rock

Like so many DJs, Paul “Rock” Spitale, owner of Blackrock Sound Solutions in Rochester, NY, endured the trial-and-error phase of his DJ business, and learned the hard way about the importance of a signed contract—be it mobile, or, in his case, club DJing.

“I once DJed an amazing Halloween party at a club where the owner was a ‘friend of a friend,” so I thought he could be trusted,” says Paul. “So I did the gig for an agreed upon amount over the phone. The night was amazing: costume contests, giveaways, and dancing all night long. The place was packed from open to close.  I worked my ass off that night giving every ounce of energy I had and was exhausted by the 4 a.m. closing time. No one wanted the night to end and several people took business cards on their way out. The owner complimented me and thanked me up and down at the end of the night.”

And then?

“He wrote me a check for less than the agreed upon amount. After I loaded all of my equipment into my vehicle, I brought the discrepancy to his attention. He drunkenly argued that I was wrong. I double checked the information in my calendar and reminded him about the amount we discussed. He stubbornly refused to acknowledge the problem so I let it go. It was my word against his at 5 a.m.”

“I tend to surround myself with good people, so after getting wind of what happened, my friend who made the referral reimbursed me.”

Bottom line? If it’s not in writing, it never happened. People rarely do business with a handshake and a smile anymore.

Secondary lesson? Says Spitale: “Never argue with a drunk person.”

Ah….and when you do draft up that contract, be sure to add a few things, but not too many: Name of client, address, place of location, date, hours of service, price, and what happens if you can’t perform because of accident or flat tire or twister or whatever else might happen, in which case you should add how you are to reimburse the client. Also, your return checks policy and protection to your equipment should be included. Remember, don’t scare the client away with too many restrictions.

Technics 1200′s: A thing of the past…

Scratch that

Little Jimmy asked Santa for some new Technics 1200 vinyl turntables to battle on this season. Unfortunately, Santa’s elves no longer make them.

That’s right. The world-renowned staple instrument of DJs everywhere will be produced no more. When prices for the iconic turntable skyrocketed this past summer, DJs went into panic mode. It was foreshadowing for the impending doom. And now Panasonic (it’s parent company) confirms that they will no longer continue to make the Technics 1200 or 1210 models.

Sad news for this DJ as well, as I have owned several pairs myself. Amid all the unhappy news one thing is for sure; I will continue to use mine when I’m in the  mood to scratch…NOT as a museum piece.
